I never intended for this piece to look medieval, let alone have a horse or green hills in the background. Sometimes paintings have a mind of there own and come out completely unexpected. The girl was originally a Valkyrie clad in armour, carrying a spear...Maybe next time ;)
The costume is based on a 13th century costume, where buttons were yet to be introduced and lacings were common. Dyes such as blue would have been relatively expensive, however browns and ochres were cheap and readily available. The under-tunic or chainse was usually saffron yellow and was often made of heavy materials such as wool or linen. Her hair is worn loose, indicating that she was probably unmarried.
